Last week I said Smackdown hit a pot of gold but this week I think it hit a pot of silver. Last week's Smackdown was one of the best all year but this week wasn't as good but I still enjoyed it.
Smackdown couldn't have started better. We saw Edge come out with Vickie and had a match. Let me remind you this is Edge's first match on Smackdown since he came back. Now Edge faced Kung Fu Naki. I was very surprised that Naki controlled the beginning of the match. He preformed some good moves on the WWE champion. Edge came back though in a terse way and got the win. After the match, Vickie announced Jeff and HHH would team up and face in a tag team gauntlet match. I will talk about that match later.
The second match was Maria vs., the Diva's champion, Michelle McCool. Now this was a non-title match but it was very well done and actually interesting. Both were great in the match and preformed some good moves. Overall, I liked the match and would like to see another one, and I think I will as Maria beat the champion with a school boy.
Also on Smackdown, we saw a return. This return was more than a year in the making as Hurricane Helms came back. He faced the disappointing MVP, or should I saw WVP (Worst Valuable Player) as he can buy a match for more than 4 months now. I was surprised how big the reaction Helms got from the crowd in the arena as they were very excited and so was I. To me, Helms looked pretty impressive. I mean I know he is going to have some ring rust but for his first match back, it was good. Of course, MVP lost again and Helms is undefeated since he came back. The match was pretty much one side as Hurricane dominated the match.
A match that I thought was somewhat a waste of time was Matt Hardy vs. Chavo Guerrero. This match, to me, was more of a time consuming one. Meaning, I think WWE just made this match to fill up some extra time they had left over. This match really didn't last long but it was pretty good. Matt and Chavo went back and forth but really no one had complete control. This match ended in a no contest as Kozlov came out and destroyed Matt. It really didn't look good for Matt as you can tell Kozlov didn't take it easy on him.
The one of two main events tonight was the tag team gauntlet match. It was Jeff Hardy and HHH vs. (first tag team) Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins. I am glad to see these two stars back on Smackdown as I think they are a great tag team. They are former tag champs and deserve to be on Smackdown more. This match between these two teams didn't last long as Jeff and HH nearly took them out pretty quickly. In this entire match, both HHH and Jeff just didn't get along together. They first tried to out due each other and then they just couldn't take each other. Jeff got the win on Zack and Curt but the next team was John Morrison and The Miz. This match between these two teams was better than the last. Miz and Morrison have become the tag team of WWE. They fight on every show and I think are probably the tag team of 2008. They were doing well against HHH and Jeff and I really wanted to know how long this whole gauntlet was going to last. I then found out that it wasn't going to be too long as HHH and Jeff just broke down and attacked each other on the outside. The referee got to the count of 10 and had to call for the bell. The winners are Miz and Morrison but Jeff and HHH were going at it and it was pretty aggressive. They ran into the ring barricade, the ring steps, the ring posts, and were attacking each other too. The other referees had to come out to stop the confrontation.
Before the main event, it was the Khali Kiss Cam, a very special Khali Kiss Cam for the holidays. They had some audience members kiss but surprisingly, Khali kissed a WWE employee and that was Eve. I thought it would be another "audience member" but it's good to mix it up. Last week here on my blog, I wanted the Kiss Cam. Well I got it but now I didn't get The Brian Kendrick fighting. Where was he? Well it looks like I can never get a "perfect" Smackdown with both of them on it.
The main event of the evening was The Undertaker vs. The Big Show. Now I am tired of steel cage matches. I mean we had 2 cage matches on Raw in the past 3 months or so. I wasn't that excited about this match but I wanted to see who would win. After all said and done, this match was a great, I mean great, main event. It was probably the best main event in all of wrestling, including TNA. Both stars went back and forth, hitting punch after punch, grapple after grapple, and strikes after strikes. These two gave it their all and really put on a show. I really didn't know who was going to win so I was excited all through the match. At one moment, Taker jumped off the top rope for a leg drop but missed and landed right on his back. Before that, there really wasn't that many times they were trying to escape the cage. They mostly tried to get a pinfall. Both used the cage as a weapon on several different occasions. I liked the match and I give it a 4 or 4.5 star. The Undertaker won with this Hell's gate move.
Overall, the matches were good; not the best, but I liked the main event the best. Next week's show should be great as we have Jeff Hardy vs. HHH.
