Here is a special installment of "my thoughts". And today I am talking about the original ECW. The original ECW used to be called the "good old days". Was that ECW really the best or is the ECW now the way to go?
Well my thoughts on the original ECW are positive. I always liked the original ECW, I mean who didn't? If you ask anyone, I bet most people would say that this time frame was the best in ECW. I am a hardcore fan, meaning I like tables, chairs, ladders, barbed wire, and all of those fun toys that they use. Not only did the original ECW have great weapons that were used but had great stars.
The original ECW was categorized as EXTREME. That is pretty much it. I don't think people even cared who was the champion or who was at the top or bottom in the rankings, but most of the fans cared about the carnage and the weapons. I think that is pretty sad but I have to admit it was the only good part in ECW back then. They had blaming tables, barbed wire bats, set up 10 tables like a tower and, most importantly, they used those weapons.
They also had some of the greatest stars in professional wrestling and the ones WWE had came from ECW. They had the Dudley Boys, Mick Foley, Tommy Dreamer, Rob Van Dam, Terry Funk, and my favorite, Sabu! In my mind, I think Sabu was the most destructive star in ECW and the one that went through the most. Sabu is characterized as "homicidal, Genocidal, and Suicidal" These were probably the most entertaining stars in wrestling. They pretty much did anything they could to entertain the fans and to get paychecks.
If you look at ECW on the business standpoint, it is pretty much a failed go ahead. First, ECW had no audience. They always went to places that housed hundreds or a couple thousand fans. No company can live off that and have all these big stars and have all of these weapons and injuries. Pual Heyman should have made it bigger and traveled to bigger arenas. Also ECW simply didn't have the money. They weren't profitable at all and they were just losing and losing. It was really like a crash and burn for ECW.
I do agree and say that this ECW was the good old days. This ECW is really not extreme but it was never intended to be. See Vince made ECW as a 3rd brand, where the young stars that are just starting out could be part of an audience and get TV time and improve. I think this was extremely successful. Just look at C.M. Punk, Evan Bourne, and so many others and it also housed some stars that really didn't make it big but also get to be in the main event on that brand like Matt Hardy and Mark Henry. I don't think the original ECW should come back. Even though I say it was the best part in ECW history, recreating those stunts and having those risks really takes a toll on the body. I mean there would be injuries galore. Too many people would see a hospital bill and it would cost WWE even more. I like weapons and I think WWE should use them more and may be go to the extent like the original ECW sometimes but not all the time. We need hardcore, extreme action once in awhile but WWE only gives us a steel cage match and let me ask you this, where is the blood? I don't think we will ever see this kind of extreme again, maybe that is a good thing, but we do need weapons and blood sometimes. I have to say that Edge vs. Mick Foley at Wrestlemania 22 was just like an original ECW match. We haven't seen this kind of match for years but we should. That is all for "my thoughts" for now but please check back to my others and wait to see my others coming soon. If you have any suggestions for a future "My thoughts" blog, then feel free to message me. Anyway that is my thoughts on this topic, but what are yours? Talk to you next time!
