Why am I a Wrestling Fan?

Friday, April 18, 2008, 10:13 PM EST [General]

Anyone that knows anything about me knows that I am a huge wrestlnig fan. Some people think it's cool and others don't and the ones the don't like it always ask me, "Why do you love wrestling so much?" If you are one of those people, this blog is for you.

I started watching wrestling in 1989 or 1990. My oldest brother, Jorge, was a big fan and got me into watching it with him. At first I didn't really know what I was watching, but I liked it because it was fun. Then, as I got a little older, I began to understand it more and fell in love with the sport; yes, I said sport. I got really attached to the characters and tried to immitate them as we all do when we're young. I became a fan of men like Hulk Hogan, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Junkyard Dog, Bret "Hit Man" Hart, Shawn Michaels, Marty Jennetty, Jake "the Snake" Roberts, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and Mr. Perfect; I wanted to be just like them.

When I became a teenager, I learned about the business side of professional wrestling and I learned a little bit about who the people I watched on my tv every week really are. I learned about the sacrifices they make to entertain fans like me everynight. I learned about the struggles that they go through just get the chance to have one match on tv. I learned about the physical, mental, and emotional pain they go through everyday. The heartache they feel everytime they say good-bye to their families, not knowing when they would see them again. Suddenly, they were no longer just characters that entertained me 3 or 4 times a week on tv. They were real people and they became my heroes, my inspiration to live out my dreams, they became a big part of my life.

Now, as an adult, I appreciate the athletism, the storytelling, the drama, and the hard work these men and women put forth to entertain me every week. I'm inspired by men like Edge, Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy, Gregory Helms, Kurt Angle, Mick Foley, and John Cena who are living out their dreams everyday of their lives. I hope to one day live out my dreams too.

I hope now you all understand why I love wrestling so much and why I get offended when people talk $h!+ about it. So next time I say something to you related to wrestling try not to say the wrong thing to me, okay?

Thank you, have a nice day.
