I've been noticing something recently, something I haven't really been able to put my finger on until now.
Even the commentary on WWE programming is now void of Attitude...
I somewhat recently watched a few WWE DVDs, included Edge's Decade of Decadence, Kane's Twisted Disturbed Life of, Triple H's King of Kings, The Best of Raw (15 Years), The Hell in a Cell DVD, the Ladders Match DVD, and back when it came out, I saw the Rock's Most Electrifying Man DVD.
And if you think about it, J.R. and the King's commentary could not have been better. All of J.R.'s catch phrases, together with King's blunt views and opinions, especially when it came to "puppies," pratically MADE Raw and WWE Pay-Per-Views.
I loved how even in the commentary, they had a heel and a face. J.R. of course was the face "OH how could he do that!? It's despicable!" to which King would begin his reply with a loud "Ha-Hah!" followed by something like "I know, it's it great, J.R.? A true champion!"
It really showed Jerry Lawler's and Jim Ross' talent. J.R. really got into it, and King was just downright funny. I love the old matches with Triple H as Hunter Hearst Helmsley, because of King's admiration to him. He also was a very good supporter of Kurt Angle back in the day... A particular match that stands out, was the "Hair vs. Hair" match between Edge and Kurt Angle when Edge was a face and everybody chanted "You Suck" along with Angle's theme song... King was hilarious rooting on WWE's Olympic Hero. And not only that, but he'd make fun of the face. In that match for example, he was all over Edge and his long hair. It was great. And I don't believe that match was that many years ago... maybe 2004?
But you watch Raw and Smackdown now, and every one of the commentators is just... appalled by everything they see. And not in the good way like J.R. back in the day... it's like they all are just very deeply saddened by the actions and events that transpire before them. They get all serious and quiet, and announce what they just witnessed... Michael Cole: "Well, King, I don't know how to say this, but Randy Orton just punted So-in-so in the face... I can't believe what I've just seen..." Jerry Lawler: "Oh man, he didn't just punt him, he almost took his head off. I just don't know what's gotten into Randy Orton."
IT'S BORING, people. Where's Jerry Lawler's "HA-HAH, OH MAN, WASN'T IT GREAT!! SO-IN-SO GOT WHAT HE DESERVED!"? Where is that!?!?
It's just not the same.
Step 1: Put J.R. and the King back together on Monday Nights. Nothing against Michael Cole, but he just fit Smackdown better. And it'll just have to be too bad, Smackdown's commentary will never live up to Raw's commentary teaming of J.R. and Jerry Lawler. You can separate them and have one on each show like they're trying, but it's just not going to work. But they could at least try making them interesting again, have King act like his old self with Michael Cole playing the reasonable one. Michael Cole makes some general statement about what just happened, and King comes back with support for the heel. SOMETHING. Please.
So yeah, I guess this is just one more thing on the list that tells us they're leaning towards a younger audience. Unfortunately.
