JEFF HARDY and matt hardy dueling diaries

    April 1, 2009

“With the two of us together, we felt there were no odds we couldn’t overcome.”

These are the words uttered just two years ago in an interview with WWE.com by a much different Matt Hardy. Since then, a certain set of odds have materialized - as orchestrated by Matt - that contradict his statement and, more importantly, compromise the blood-bound covenant between two brothers.

Normally, participation in WrestleMania - let alone the milestone 25th WrestleMania - is something that Superstars look forward to all year, finding pride in the opportunity to perform on the absolute Grandest Stage of Them All. But not for the Hardys - one filled with wrath, the other jealousy. For Jeff and Matt, this is the moment even they never thought would happen: A day where brother must take up arms against brother ... under Extreme Rules.

How did it come to this? That's the single question the WWE Universe - though admittedly excited about a dream match between Jeff and Matt Hardy - have been asking for months now. While moving onward to The Biggest Spectacle of Them All and WWE.com's week-long 'Mania trek beside Jeff and Matt Hardy in "Dueling Diaries," the WWE Universe glances back at the shards of the past now strewn about a cold arena floor.

    In the Beginning ...

Before the ring, before the hot arena lights, before the successes and failures, Matt and Jeff Hardy were brothers, bound by blood. From sharing family vacations to sharing the seemingly far-fetched aspiration to one day perform in the middle of a wrestling ring, the Hardys lived side-by-side.

    Making It

Developing their soon-to-be-renowned craft atop a trampoline in the tree-engulfed woods of Cameron, N.C., Jeff and Matt ultimately achieved a dream long dreamt when they joined WWE's tag team ranks in 1993. Together. Enthusiastic, they embarked upon a shared journey first tasted in their wildest imaginations.

    Boys to Men

Playing the part of the "new guys," the "young kids," the Hardys' desire to earn the admiration and respect of their in-ring peers and fans worldwide was immediately noticed. No matter the competition, the Hardys were unquestionably living their dream but aspired to climb higher and higher ...

    Hardys' First 'Mania

... which they did, most literally, at WrestleMania 2000. Together, Matt and Jeff competed at their first WrestleMania, almost nine years ago exactly in a Triple Threat Ladder Match. The Hardy Boys proved themselves men in Anaheim, Calif., against WWE's top teams of the time: Edge & Christian and The Dudleys. Anyone who's ever seen Jeff Hardy's dauntless, bold Swanton Bomb from the ladder's peak has never forgotten it. Though Edge & Christian triumphed that night, Matt and Jeff found future success, capturing the World Tag Team Titles on several occasions.

    Together Again

In May 2003, Jeff Hardy was released from WWE, leaving Matt on a solitary quest to reach the top. Enduring fate's many twists for several years thereafter, Matt and Jeff found themselves ultimately competing in the same WWE ring once more when The Charismatic Enigma returned "home" in late summer 2006. Back together in WWE but competing on separate brands, the Hardys were reinspired and reignited.

Their destinies would again intertwine to form of a cohesive tag team unit seven years to the date of their "loss" at WrestleMania 2000. On Raw, the Hardys once again captured the World Tag Team Championship on April 2, 2007 - their first time sharing tag gold since 2001.

    Shared Achievement

As both brothers continued to grow and excel, they each found significant success in singles action. Jeff carried the Intercontinental Title on a handful of occasions and Matt held the United States Championship. The first Hardy to snare a World Title proved to be the older brother, Matt, who secured the ECW Championship in one of three Unforgiven Championship Scrambles in September 2008. Though it was one Hardy's finest career achievement, both shared the celebration of a long journey fulfilled.

    Brothers and Champions

Early Hardy holiday merriment kicked off the night of Armageddon when Jeff won the WWE Championship on Dec. 14, 2008 in Buffalo, N.Y. For years, Jeff struggled to crack the glass of the symbolic ceiling that lingered overhead. Yet, with one seismic Swanton Bomb, Jeff pinned Edge to silence naysaying critics and finally fortify his position at the top of Friday Night SmackDown and the squared circle.

With Matt as reigning ECW Champion and Jeff as the newly crowned WWE Title holder, the Hardys collectively held two-thirds of WWE's most coveted gold. Their father, watching at home in North Carolina, couldn't have been any prouder.

    Unseating His Brother

In the weeks that followed The Charismatic Enigma's biggest triumph, misfortune met Jeff at every pass. Behind the wheel and in the arena, Jeff was the victim of a series of accidents including a late night car crash and a bizarre pyrotechnic malfunction on SmackDown. Though seemingly circumstantial, the truth would later be learned ... but not before the greatest tragedy of all: The outright betrayal by his own brother at the Royal Rumble.

Consumed by jealousy and angst after losing the ECW Title, Matt Hardy wrapped a steel chair around Jeff's skull, costing him the WWE Championship. Less than one month after standing beside his sibling with a false smile for photo opportunities, Matt made sure he wasn't the only Hardy devoid of championship gold.

The elder Hardy later revealed that Jeff's many hazardous incidents were all manufactured by the same individual he'd spent a lifetime trusting and supporting. This dangerous, treachery-laden slope would ultimately become the Hardys' Road to WrestleMania, a rugged and rancorous path they now share much like so many other experiences in their careers.

But this time, there can be no hugs distributed or arms raised in solidarity, together. Under Extreme Rules, there will be only one Hardy left standing, for better or worse.

    DAY 1

    Limousine ridin' ... , 3:00 p.m.

Relaxed in the chilled air of a limousine, Jeff composes himself en route to the first of many events during these most important (and heavily booked) days ahead. In an environment typically associated with pinstripe suits and high level business types, Jeff sits comfortably in his usual, most casual attire.

    Stepping out, 4:06 p.m.

Moments before the arrival of his brother in downtown Houston, Matt Hardy finds solace on an unoccupied staircase. Matt embraces the embittered feelings that seem to only boil more rapidly with each passing moment. Inside, his WrestleMania opponent’s finely painted works line the walls for all attendees to peruse, including pieces entitled “Pink Eyes” and “Strong Jaw” – enough to make Matt grimace.

    WrestleMania media blitz, 4:55 p.m.

Chewing back the pain of his brother’s broken loyalty, Jeff put forth his characteristic pleasant disposition when met by a thrush of reporters and camera crews. As painstaking as his past few months have been, Hardy doesn’t allow them to suppress his excitement and enthusiasm for such a momentous week. In the alcoves of the Houston Public Library for an exclusive WrestleMania Art event, The Charismatic Enigma fields questions and describes the excitement that comes with WrestleMania in one of the nation’s biggest cities.

    "Where's your art, Matt?", 5:26 p.m.

Away from the throngs of fans and media, Matt tries to maintain a more mellow attitude at a less crowded region of WWE’s art show. He picks at some appetizers and sips some water before an unwanted interruption by a Superstar known for making waves.

Salt in the wound, Mr. Kennedy – who also had some of his own works on display – swings around a corner to come face-to-face with the morose Hardy. The outspoken Superstar is acerbic in his tactics, asking Matt Hardy where his masterpieces could be found before complimenting Jeff’s piece at the opposite end of the building’s corridor. Cooler heads prevail as the sour Superstar decides to leave Kennedy’s question unanswered and take a closer look at some of the exhibits.

    Creative expression, 5:53 p.m.

The instant focal point of the WrestleMania Art exhibition is Jeff Hardy, who is carefully covering an oversized canvas with bright acrylics in between dabbing his paintbrush with canary yellow paint globs. Without a question, the former WWE Champion is a highly expressive individual with a passion for art in many forms – written word, murals or in-ring performance. His current labor of love: A large, ominous face.

“A lot of times, this is a good release for me, a good relaxation process,” Jeff admitted. “When I’m painting, I get into a zone. The ultimate goal I have is to finish the product and be happy and satisfied with it.”

    Cold as ice, 6:34 p.m.

As large a city Houston is, this was bound to happen. It was just a matter of time before the schedules of both Matt and Jeff intersected, but neither realized it would be on the very first day of the WrestleMania festivities. Sickened by his younger sibling’s spirit and unimpressed by his brush strokes, Matt snickers from afar and propels an icy glare.

    Remaining unfazed, 7:09 p.m.

The photo flashes and awe-spun crowd prove to be too much for Jeff’s older brother to endure, drawing Matt too close for comfort and yielding an unexpected confrontation between the two. Briefly removing Jeff from his zone, Matt jaw jacks just enough to make several spectators uneasy.

Tolerating Matt’s falsely encouraging words to “enjoy the moment” while he can, Jeff retains his composure.

“I won’t let his presence harm me at all. It doesn’t faze me,” claimed a resolute Jeff Hardy, seemingly more upset that he was unable to use spray paints to forge his mid-event masterpiece this evening.

    A deep look, 8:42 p.m.

The auction portion of the WrestleMania Art event generates success for the public library’s fundraising, partly thanks to Jeff Hardy, whose untitled canvas work secured a substantial final bid.

Jeff and the other Superstars and Divas in attendance have already left for the evening, leaving only Matt Hardy, who conspicuously approaches his brother’s finished masterwork. Peering eerily deep into the round eyes of the immense portrait, Matt Hardy begins to angrily address the sight in front of him.

“Jeff drew this thing that seemed to be the highlight of the whole event. I don’t even know if you can classify this as art,” Matt gruffly muttered. “It’s nothing more than an oversized coloring book with a silly face. Yet, he gets this great credit for being this amazing artist, kind of like the same credit he gets for being an amazing wrestler.”

He continued, “This Sunday, people will learn once and for all that I am the superior Hardy in every way.”

    DAY 2

    Matt's media march, 5:07 a.m.

After spending a long first night in the Bayou City, anxious for Sunday’s confrontation, Matt emerges from his hotel room at 5 a.m. for an early series of media appearances. A quick scan of text messages, voicemails and e-mails later, it is still dark out as Hardy meets with local NBC reporter Mariza Reyes for a live television interview.

    Studio lights out, 8:53 a.m.

Limited time for rest, Matt makes it to the local KRIV television studio for a live appearance on Fox 26 Morning News. In a darkened green room waiting area, Matt sneaks in a most impressive power nap before stepping onto the interview stage. He makes good use of a lighting sand bag to rest his head for mere minutes until a producer’s knock cues Matt for an on-camera shoot beside newscasters Sibila Vargas and Jose Grinan. No make-up, no powder, no prep. Just Matt.

    Rays of light, 10:10 a.m.

A door opens on one of the most upper floors of the WWE-captive hotel, allowing some light into Jeff Hardy’s fully darkened room. The enigmatic competitor glides out of his temporary domicile – a familiar concept for him – to begin his day. Jeff briefly stops and stares out over the hotel lobby and its many rooms. Ordinarily, Jeff might be on his way to meet his older brother to hang loose. But those days are long gone; now, it’s just Jeff.

    Looking back, 11:40 a.m.

One similarity the Hardys still share is their adoration of the squared circle; they are and forever will be fans of this unparalleled form of entertainment. Thus, it’s no surprise to find Matt Hardy gazing at countless WWE artifacts at a memorabilia station in the emptied Reliant Center, the site of WrestleMania Axxess.

Amid WrestleMania paraphernalia from all decades, Matt singles out WrestleMania IV as a critical factor in his steps toward Superstardom.

“I wasn’t a die hard fan at the time, I was a fair weather fan,” he said. “But after learning that Macho Man – the wrestler I picked to win – did win, I remember going to the video store and renting this event and watching it.”

He added, “This is the moment that Jeff and I became lifelong fans. From that week out, we never missed wrestling; WWE, NWA, WCW, whatever. That’s the point where we decided this was what we wanted to do.”

    The early arrival, 1:37 p.m.

The unique Superstar departs from his hotel and heads off for a ride on Houston’s many winding highways. Jeff’s end destination: Reliant Stadium, Sunday’s battle ground. Outside the home of WrestleMania XXV, Jeff scans the broad perimeter of Reliant Park, a 350-acre backdrop for The Biggest Spectacle of Them All.

    Entitlement, 1:40 p.m.

A glisten catches Matt’s eye – one that arguably caught his eye years ago when he began his career in the ring. The source is the WWE Championship, a title Matt’s certainly aimed to capture one day.

The WWE Title is also the same gold Matt cost his brother, which is likely the thought crossing his mind as he narrows in on the displayed treasure. Matt looks through the glass, almost beyond the physical prize in front of him to the anguish he’s caused Jeff. A proud grin forms on his face, creasing his signature facial hair.

    Setting the stage, 2:23 p.m.

Jeff greets WWE production crew members who are tirelessly constructing the stunning set and layout of Reliant Stadium, a weeks-long task. Discussing the turbulent Road to WrestleMania between him and his fraternal enemy, Jeff converses with familiar faces, passing structures freshly assembled.

An eyeful, 2:31 (EXCLUSIVE VDEO: JEFF IN RELIANT STADIUM)

At first glance, Jeff is instantly awed by the massive stadium that is still in the preparation process before being invaded by roughly 70,000 card (and ticket) carrying members of the WWE Universe. Looking up at the vast retractable roof, Jeff can barely believe the immensity of the surrounding structure.

“It’s what we wait for every year,” Jeff passionately detailed.

    Proving grounds, 3:39 p.m.

Last year, history was made in Orlando, Fla., at WrestleMania XXIV – an event in which Jeff Hardy did not participate. This time around, Jeff looks to write a new chapter in his personal history by overcoming his wrathful brother in an Extreme Rules Match. Jeff has awaited the approaching moment to once again dance on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

The ring mat is a common associate of Hardy’s and he doesn’t hasten in getting close. The next time Jeff will have this perspective of the Reliant Stadium, it will be the day he perhaps never thought he’d see since childhood: The day he takes up arms against his own brethren.

    Singled out, 4:00 p.m.

Adding relevance to his confrontation with Matt, Sunday’s contest will also be Jeff’s very first singles bout at WrestleMania … against his brother. Pressure on.

“It’s my first singles match [at WrestleMania],” Jeff said. “It’s a little nerve wracking,”

“We have a lot to live up to – brother vs. brother – and hopefully, we do because it’s going to be crazy to see 70,000 people in this place,” he added, absorbing the setting one last time. “It will really set in when I come through that curtain. I’m more excited than anything else.”

Up in the sky, 10:38 p.m.

Miles and miles away from his sibling’s earlier haunts, Matt Hardy is equally contemplative on the now barren event grounds near Reliant Stadium. Walking the floors, Matt’s attention shifts skyward, again by an unusual connection that seems to draw him to his brother at all times. The spurned elder Hardy shrugs off his disdain and moves along.

Family that ‘preys’ together, 11:02 p.m.

Chillingly serious, Matt Hardy fixes himself a brooding ground in a vacant ring. Kneeling before the turnbuckle, Matt turns the squared circle into his bizarre altar. There is no prayer, however, only intended prey.

“I’ve always been the responsible one, the one who kept him out of trouble,” Matt muttered of his brother. In just three days under Extreme Rules, the angst ridden Hardy could again be responsible, this time for endangering Jeff’s career.

    DAY 3

    Morning light, 9:19 a.m.

The day has just begun and Jeff Hardy is slowly maneuvering his way into his Friday. The enigmatic Superstar’s rise varies today from yesterday, it seems. The window curtails are fully drawn to permit entry for beams of natural light. Jeff is contentedly plopped atop his hotel room mattress, though he briefly describes a fairly restless night and similarly restless legs. Given this, he is maximizing a light morning just hours prior to an appearance scheduled at WrestleMania Axxess.

    Call from home, 9:31 a.m.

Jeff climbs from the pillow flanked relief of his bed at the sound of his cell phone. It’s his father – the same man who raised Jeff’s WrestleMania opponent. While his delicate, sympathetic tone remains steady, the son’s body language reveals his quandary. Of course, no father wishes to see their boys clash, let alone fight under terms where the most intensely brutal assaults are condoned and even somewhat encouraged by the match’s name itself.

Almost inaudible muffles on the other end of the phone portray Jeff’s dad’s distress as his tonal inflection clearly pleads with Jeff’s sensibilities. The conversation finally ends with Jeff reassuring his dad that this match simply has to happen. As much as he cannot support this conflict or their Extreme Rules Match, the Hardys’ father has no choice but to hope for the best while watching from his North Carolina home on Sunday.

    Jeff is a Mac?, 10:09 a.m.

An emotionally taxing discussion with his dad sends Jeff in search of a seat. Releasing a sigh, the exasperated, conflicted Hardy lowers his cellular device and diverts his attention with gadgetry. Not surprisingly, Jeff proves to be a Mac type of guy, at least when it comes to his mobile phone. He sorts through his iPhone, tapping and swishing through windows. Jeff explains that he doesn’t really get too far into heavy tech stuff but enjoys a few applications in particular: Shazam, Pandora and Google Earth.

    Strange glow, 10:33 a.m.

Reflective, Jeff moves toward the large landscape window overlooking the Bayou City. A strangely marvelous glow lingers within Jeff’s quarters as the morning sun penetrates the room. The bright light engulfs Hardy to create what looks like a visual manifestation of his aura. But this luminescence creates a false sense of tranquility because even this warm radiance is not enough to settle Jeff’s conflicted feelings.

These boots were made for ... Extreme Rules, 10:52 a.m. (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO)

It’s an unsung detail that many Superstars pay keen attention to, especially at events the magnitude of WrestleMania: New ring attire.

For Jeff Hardy, basic black is tried and true, while vibrant detailing lies in his embodied fashion: His unconventional tattoos. But for the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania and such a crucial match in his career, Jeff sought to kick things off right. On Sunday, he will break in a brand new pair of ring boots that were custom made by a company called Stagecoach, who supplies Jeff with all of his competitive footwear. According to Jeff, he typically changes his boots every six months, but this is The Biggest Spectacle of Them All.

As a sneak peek, Jeff removes the pair from a special satchel to reveal a sleek set of royal purple boots accented by gun metal grey straps. They are just as uniquely eye-catching as you would expect from Jeff Hardy.

    About that time, 11:23 a.m.

A glance at the digital alarm clock and Jeff realizes it’s almost time to move. But first, however, he pulls up a chair to reassess his schedule for the day. He fingers through a multi-page booklet containing event details and times, phone numbers, addresses, reminders, maps, recommended eateries in the local Houston area – an overwhelming amount of information just for the five fully booked days of WrestleMania week.

Later today, the tattooed warrior appears at Reliant Center for Friday Night SmackDown live at WrestleMania Axxess, the epicenter of WWE festivities. Jeff feels certain that today he will cross paths with his older brother and foe, Matt.

    Table for one, 2:54 p.m.

It’s the early afternoon and Matt catches a quick, late lunch at a nearby sandwich shop. He attempts to enjoy every bite – alone, as he stresses – until he is recognized and approached by one of the eatery’s employees. Matt reluctantly accepts the fan’s handshake, but abruptly curtails any opportunity for conversation, refocusing on his midday meal – an important element of his regimen.

“As the day goes on, I try to eat less carbs and more meat,” Matt explained. “It doesn’t always work out that way but that’s the plan.”

    Perfect enemies, 3:57 p.m.

Almost an hour later, Matt finds himself behind the wheel and at the radio dial. While cruising through Houston’s busy intersections en route to the gym, the baleful Hardy searches for a soundtrack. He passes up talk radio, top 50 pop and more, finally settling when a suitable song catches his attention.

Matt raises the volume and reveals that he recognizes the tune, “Passive” by A Perfect Circle, aggressively stating that it reminds him of his brother.

“The hook in the song is about two people who are each other’s perfect enemies,” said the elder Hardy brother. “It’s a debate about how they used to be very close but now they’re separated, ultimately, perfect enemies.”

    Fit for fighting, 4:31 p.m. (
    EXCLUSIVE VIDEO)

Inside the gym, Matt makes time for cardio exercise and then works on his back and shoulders as well. In his head on loop, the “Passive” tune replays but is accompanied by the treadmill’s whirr and clanking weights.

“I’m a big cardio freak because I like to stay in shape,” Matt admitted, citing a recent MCL tear that slowed him down a bit in late 2008. “I’ve been doing a lot of cardio to make sure that my wind is good for however long I need to go at WrestleMania.”

This is a true contrast, according to Matt, to his younger sibling.

“Jeff doesn’t do a lot of gym. He’s not a big gym person,” the former ECW Champion said in between weightlifting reps. “He’s lazy and it will eventually catch up with him, especially with all the risks he takes. In the long haul, my body will last and be a lot healthier than his.”

    In transit, 5:05 p.m.

Elsewhere in the Bayou City, Jeff climbs into a lengthy coach bus with a host of WWE Superstars, Divas and Legends headed for WrestleMania Axxess. Among others, WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2009 Inductee Howard Finkel greets Jeff on his way down the narrow center aisle.

The free spirited Superstar steps directly toward the most rear seat aboard the black charter bus, where he sits undisturbed for the ride to Reliant Park. Dusk is beginning to fall upon Texas and wading in the orange sun purges a yawn from a clearly comfortable Jeff Hardy.

    Dirty dealings, 5:53 p.m.

Before 2009, it would be a rare occurrence to catch Matt Hardy conversing with someone like John Morrison. As they both exit the gym, Matt compliments the so-called Shaman of Sexy on the bite of his banter in a recent edition of “The Dirt Sheet” on WWE.com. This, of course, leads to an exchange where Jeff is the target of put-downs and mean-spirited wit. The sight is still strange and difficult to accept for anyone who has seen the Hardys prior to the termination of their relationship earlier this year by Matt.

    Dreamers meet, 6:06 p.m.

Corralled into a curtained partition with THQ Superstar Challenge competitors and WrestleMania Axxess attendees, Jeff Hardy waits for his call to head out for an autograph session. There is one special Jeff Hardy fan, however, who cannot attend this event today in person. For this very ill 11-year old whose one desire is to speak with The Charismatic Enigma, dreams are about to come true. Jeff picks up the phone, dials the child and changes their day, their week, their month and quite possibly, their life, by fulfilling this single, simple wish.

    Axxess-ible, 6:11 p.m.

It’s time to head to the autograph booth and the method of transportation for the former WWE Champion is a cart which will maneuver around the back lots of the Reliant Center. Hardy’s cohort for this short trip? “Mean” Gene Okerlund. The pair rides into the capacity crowded Axxess area and a hum turns to deafening “Hardy!” chants. A line of devout WWE Universe members is already in place and it erupts as well. The rows of fans snake nearly a dozen times to consolidate the voracious Jeff Hardy supporters on hand for his autograph signing.

    Sent to voicemail, 6:42 p.m.

Earlier, a North Carolina telephone number popped up on Jeff Hardy’s phone. Hours past, Matt’s mobile rings as he pulls up to a stop light less than a mile from the gym he’d just left. It’s his father.

Rather than engage in a conversation with his heartsick parent who is sitting so many states away, Matt immediately ignores the call. He doesn’t wish to turn back or bury any blood-stained hatchets.

The light turns green, the callous Superstar tosses the cell back onto the vacant passenger seat and he continues to drive.

    WWE Universal appeal, 6:44 p.m.

While his brother drives around the Bayou City boasting a soured face, Jeff conjures innumerable smiles from an incredible number of our fans.

Two inked supporters of The Charismatic Enigma show off their proud body art, including Hardy-centric symbols on one young girl’s right leg and another’s left arm.

Before the Sharpie ink of his autographed t-shirt (still on him) can dry, Matthew from Dallas shouts, “Jeff Hardy is my favorite wrestler! I hope [he wins] against Matt Hardy. Go Jeff!”

Lastly, there’s Carmen, a wheelchair-bound Houston girl with royal purple streaks in her stark black hair and every detail of Jeff Hardy attire. Clamoring for composure or some easing of her overwhelming elation, the young girl shares the reason for her blissful tears.

“I’ve had 37 surgeries and it’s always been a dream of mine to meet Jeff Hardy,” Carmen said. “He is my hero and if it wasn’t for Jeff’s entrance, I wouldn’t be able to move my legs. I’ve been in brutal rehab and he helped me get through it."

She adds that she has proudly watched Jeff’s personal evolution since 1993.

“He’s my hero,” she emphatically declared. “I never leave my house without my Hardy necklace. I’m so happy I met him."

Thinking inside the box, 8:19 p.m.

The autograph session comes to an end, but Jeff isn’t yet ready to bail on WrestleMania Axxess … especially when there’s an oversized action figure carton within a couple of yards.

Jeff is ushered past a swarm of Hardy loyalists to the display, where he gets within the encasement for an odd yet endearing display of facial expressions and more. He steps out and begins his march away from the main exhibit floor while slapping fives with fans lucky enough to look up and realize Jeff Hardy is just walking past them.

Though one humorous fan offers Jeff the chance to hold his baby, one pass-off does, in fact, take place. A very dedicated WWE devotee generates a homemade scrapbook that includes a number of pictures featuring the brothers-turned-men-at arms, as well as ticket stubs, clippings and much more.

Stuck, torn and tattered, 9:20 p.m.

Jeff is long gone before Matt appears for his autograph signing. Still, the elder sibling keeps quiet and reticent with a touch of hostility at these events.

The last straw seems to be an image of Jeff and Matt, who took hold of the fan’s promotional picture in his hands and tore it down the middle – leaving the Jeff section in indecipherably tattered pieces on the ground.

That same moment, Matt resets. He’s stuck in thought and stuck in time, too, as fans step forward to unsuccessfully request his autograph. With Matt almost blanking out in the corner of the long table, WWE Universe members just keep moving along with the rest of a world that’s also dancing in front of the trance-captive Hardy. It’s not long before Matt heads out, on his own accord.

    DAY 4

    The descent, 7:13 a.m.

The alarm sounds and it’s another day closer. There is little time to be wasted on the eve of the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania.

Matt surfaces from the seclusion of his room and heads to the fitness center, ensuring an early day workout. He walks down the corridor past trays of half-finished room service outside other guest rooms en route to routine training. On the elevator, Matt peeks out over the hotel vacant lobby at an early hour.

    Reflection, 7:30 a.m.

Perpetually focused, Matt engages in intense physical training. Rigorous and efficient in his exercise, Hardy pauses for a brief examination of his physique. A mildly raw look upon his visage raises questions about what type of thoughts could be twisting and snaking around in his mind.

As Matt stands before the honesty of a mirrored wall, it’s possible that his anger hinders him from recognizing the changed man he sees.

    Inspired, 9:47 a.m.

Levels above his brother’s relentless strength training, Jeff Hardy spins a drastically dissimilar narrative. Cuddled up close to his girlfriend, Jeff speaks with Beth in a delicately mellowed tone. The couple rests atop the plush bed, distilling an impenetrable harmony and their overwhelming adoration. Jeff doesn’t need to search far for inspiration.

His concentration breaks as the two pass lighthearted words that easily yield laughter, while their intertwined legs start to slowly detangle. (Videos of Jeff: Immune to Fear | High Expectations | This Time, It's Different)

    Morning challenge, 10:01 a.m.

As part of the WrestleMania week festivities, the Houston Public Library played host to the WrestleMania Reading Challenge Finals to celebrate the enthusiasm for reading shared by 15 very special teenagers. Pictures are flashing feet away, but Matt Hardy could barely be any less interested. According to the callous Superstar, he agreed to his participation a long while ago which he strongly regrets. This is time that could be used for additional time preparing for his approaching bout.

Reading between the lines, 11:22 a.m.

Two students from Houston prevail in the national WrestleMania Reading Challenge, earning polished trophies as well as front row seats to WrestleMania. Matt half-heartedly congratulates the commendable winners, covetously inspecting the symbol of their efforts. His attention drifts as someone strikes up a brief conversation about the battle with Jeff the next day. Capping off his defamatory, anti-brother statements, Matt gets outspoken about the gravity of the match.

“It’s probably the biggest match of my career,” he claimed.

    Fly gear, 1:29 p.m.

Up and about for some time now, Jeff drudges through the loosely packed clothing in his luggage and the pieces strewn about his hotel room. He is piecing together his ensemble for one of WWE’s most meaningful evenings: The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. This occasion calls for formal wear – not exactly Jeff’s forte, but it’s only appropriate for this night. Still, even the high-flyer’s more crisp attire bears Hardy’s standout style.

In a handful of hours, Jeff sits solo in the crowd while an esteemed set of the squared circle’s most famous names join so many others.

Back to the future, 2:18 p.m.

On the way back to the hotel, Matt opts to take a detour, leading him to a future destination: Reliant Stadium. Inexplicably, he almost traces his brother’s exact steps from two days earlier at the site of their imminent clash.

The last time Matt the stars aligned for Houston and WrestleMania was eight years ago. Matt was there. Then together with his brother, Matt fought fearlessly in a TLC Match against Edge & Christian and The Dudleys. Flash forward to find Matt’s eyes fixed upward, perhaps reliving matches and moments like this with Jeff.

    Waiting game, 4:41 p.m.

Before he can roll to the Toyota Center for the Hall of Fame Ceremony, Jeff Hardy finds himself in a green room setting. The day after Kofi Kingston championed the THQ Superstar Challenge, the video game of choice – “Legends of WrestleMania” – is still being played. Surprisingly, however, it’s just not Jeff’s thing. Instead, the enigma waits patiently for his transportation, finding enjoyment in the likenesses of old school Superstars’ character models.

    Matt can take a joke, 5:00 p.m.

Once again at the mirror today, Matt admires the sheer shimmer of his elaborately tailored suit. Perhaps triggered by the shade of violet accenting his sleek ensemble, Hardy channels another villain in a sinister monologue.

“This town needs an enema,” he uttered, quoting The Joker. “Where does he get those wonderful ties?”

    Capturing contrast, 5:14 p.m.

Spend enough time with Jeff Hardy and you’re bound to experience an interesting sight. In this case, the former WWE Champion’s body art creates a deeply contrasting visual. Against the formal attire for the Hall of Fame, one of Jeff’s newest tattoos – a gremlin peering through the pulled back skin of his throat – connects its wild eyes with the camera lens. Jeff explains that this ink work is the mastery of Shane, the lead artist at Gas Chamber Ink – Shannon Moore’s tattoo parlor in North Carolina.

Gotta be the shoes, 5:25 p.m.

Unparalleled style, cool without effort. As Jeff applies the finishing touches to his evening wear in the locker room of the Toyota Center, he zips up his leather shoes and exposes fine detailing at their tops. He earns compliments from several Superstars in passing.

    Betrayer betrayed, 5:46 p.m.

Carefully stalking his WrestleMania enemy in the rear passages of the Hall of Fame venue, Matt Hardy stumbles across Jeff Hardy sharing discourse with a common mentor, Michael “P.S.” Hayes. None too pleased, Matt’s mood expresses that he – the betrayer – somehow feels betrayed.

Called to the Hall, 5:55 p.m.

Matt ensures that he is far, far apart from Jeff as he enters the fan-flooded arena, moments before the Hall of Fame Ceremony commences. He examines his ticket and skulks his way from the shadowed entryway toward his seat.

In the air tonight, 6:03 p.m.

It’s finally time for the showcase of WWE’s most legendary names. The entire WWE roster – including Legends and producers – is wrangled up in the narrow halls of the Toyota Center and transited out to the arena floor to their assigned seats. Despite the great number of huge events he’s experienced, the glitz of this spectacle is enough to inspire wide eyes in Jeff.

    Causing a seat stir, 6:06 p.m.

Ushered to his assigned seat, Matt learns that he will be only a couple of rows from his own flesh and blood, Jeff. And it makes him irate. Matt creates a scene, even describing to Edge – of all people – the “audacity” of producers to position him so close to his estranged brethren. The seething Hardy seeks a new location on the complete opposite end of the arena, where he is flanked by a trio of temporarily unoccupied chairs.

    With honor, 6:18 p.m.

Years ago, Jeff and Matt Hardy both underwent intensive training at the infamous Funkin’ Dojo – the breeding grounds of Dory Funk Jr. Tonight, Dory and his brother, Terry, find fulfillment in their careers by their Hall of Fame induction. Seated beside his girlfriend, Jeff beams at the honor bestowed upon one of his mentors. It’s fair game to wonder if Jeff (along with his sibling) might one day achieve the same status as the brothers Funk and fellow familial honorees, the Von Erichs.

    Spoil of fame, 6:38 p.m.

Within the Toyota Center, 15,000 WWE Universe members and a floor filled with WWE Superstars and Divas from all decades respectfully rise to their feet for Hall of Fame Inductees, the Von Erichs. All but one individual participates in the standing ovation: Matt Hardy.

His mood was spoiled by the earlier interaction between his sibling and the Von Erich’s presenter, Michael Hayes. The sight of Matt’s mentor on stage maddens the poker-faced Hardy and compels him to sit indignantly.

Tonight, two great family names are being added to the revered WWE Hall of Fame, while Matt and Jeff meet under such extreme circumstances 24 hours later. Irony stabs deep this evening in Houston.

    Twenty-four left, 8:43 p.m.

The atmosphere is vividly joyful and Jeff Hardy shares this emotion with the entire Toyota Center. Doused in celebratory confetti that illuminates his disposition, he doesn’t permit the rapidly approaching “big day” to curtail his merriment for so many respected squared circle veterans.

The week has run empty like fleeting sand in an hourglass. And all that stands between he and his brother are 24 hours.

    Absence of color, 8:44 p.m.

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s closing comments leave the entire auditorium in a deafening roar. The confetti falls from the echoing rafters, dressing every Superstar beneath it in multicolored bits. Smiles abound except for the lone Hardy, who stands fantasizing of tomorrow night’s outcome – his version. As bright hued as the paper shreds enshrouding him are, Matt Hardy’s dark intentions are discernible in his frosty glance and they eclipse all

    Last Day 5

    The morning blues, 8:29 a.m.

Day breaks in Houston and April 5 has finally crept its way to fruition. The first thing, however, that races through Jeff Hardy’s mind when he wakes at 6:30 is getting to his early morning WrestleMania Axxess Q&A session at 8:30 sharp. Shaking off any early morning grogginess, Jeff glides down the aisle and rounds the ring to slap five after five.

This morning, Jeff appears with a new look, a refreshing cerulean blue tint to his hair. A “real rush job” as he describes it, something he did in less than an hour last night after the Hall of Fame.

    Popping the questions, 8:40 a.m.

Among many insightful questions directly from the WWE Universe members, Jeff talks alternative careers if he had never become a WWE Superstar. His responses are musician, graphic designer, even landscaper – anything creative with an opportunity to make art.

Next, one female fan in attendance shouts above the rest, hollering a marriage proposal to Hardy, which he politely declines with a humble smile.

Before heading out, Jeff reverses roles and asks the attendees if they would like to see him go with or without face paint for his match later today. They respond with a resounding “YES!"

    Facing the event, 10:43 a.m.

Jeff travels from WrestleMania Axxess across Reliant Park to the home of the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania. He passes production trucks on his way inside the stadium bearing the face of the one and only Phenom. The demon’s glare doesn’t faze Hardy, though it reminds Jeff of Undertaker’s legacy at WrestleMania – a showcase at the absolute pinnacle of WWE events.

He is a long way from his first match against Razor Ramon in the early ’90s, and even further from the Moore County Fair in North Carolina, where he and Matt first started performing so many years ago in front of (modest) crowds.

    Go away, 11:02 a.m.

Refuge is within Jeff’s crosshairs as he maneuvers through the halls of Reliant Stadium with bags containing his ring gear. In the locker room area, Hardy turns around many bends for a quiet, unoccupied space. His steps have been traced for the entirety of the week and he has welcomed the company. Still, the subtlety of some oddly appropriately signage conveniently displays the thought that likely lingers in Jeff’s mind.

    40 (or less) winks, 11:14 a.m.

It’s been a long beginning to the an important day. With plenty of time to spare before he assumes his game face, Hardy finally hits the snooze button hours after his alarm first sounded. Jeff kicks off his loosely tied Adidas sneakers and stretches out on a couch within a stadium lounge. This will be his last rest prior to locking up in an Extreme Rules Match with Matt.

    The arrival, 12:10 p.m.

A bit later than his brother, Matt makes his grand entrance at Reliant Stadium. It’s been a fairly restful morning for this Hardy, who rolls his suitcase behind him. Afflicted by deep rooted hostility, Matt’s pace is deliberate and methodical. If you ask him, this is his day.

    A glimpse of destiny, 12:18 p.m.

The lone, aggressive Hardy saunters around the wide stadium passageways, searching for the locker room to unpack. He suddenly pauses in his stride, tilting his head leftward down a corridor to his destiny: The ground floor of Reliant Stadium. Just yesterday, Matt made his visit to this spot, but not with the aura of so many beaming spotlights and colorful cascades of light.

    Routine ready, 12:33 p.m.

After considering a trip out onto the stadium grounds, Matt opts to keep moving. As he has insisted for five full days, Matt is relying on intense physical training to secure an advantage over his brother and, ultimately, victory. Consistent with his mantra, Matt pauses beside a glass window that overlooks a gym facility within Reliant. This will make do for one final workout shortly.

    Unzipped, 1:09 p.m.

Matt finds an unpacking point at last and quickly unzips his luggage. Its contents include a knee brace that’s usually concealed beneath the pant legs of his ring attire. Hardy also reveals his ring boots, which he fully intends on connecting with his brother’s body in mere hours.

    True colors, 1:39 p.m.

Last night, while Matt Hardy scowled in the fourth row of the WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, his fellow North Carolinians clinched their spot in the NCAA Championship Finals. Matt’s Carolina blue Tar Heels jersey is his standard issue warm-up attire, but their triumph just one night earlier gives him an inflated sense of pride. He tightens his sneaker laces for a rigorous exercise routine.

Just as UNC topped rival Villanova, Matt believes he will not just conquer, but also obliterate Jeff tonight.

    Superstar-struck, 2:06 p.m.

The stars are out in Houston, and it’s not just the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania logo. While Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger is meeting and greeting various Superstars and Divas, the one and only Kid Rock is rehearsing his live performance in front of 70,000 unoccupied seats. In the dressing room area, Jeff Hardy passes by a monitor displaying the run-through and stops to catch the culmination of Rock’s preliminary performance.

    Suiting attire, 2:14 p.m.

Just as Jeff plans to unveil his new gun metal and purple boots, Matt has his own new garment that he saved just for WrestleMania. The item is a stark, black velvet jacket with meticulous stitching of a menacing gargoyle, its hypnotic eyes suggesting themes of malice and sheer wickedness – ideals recently embraced by Matt Hardy.

“It’s the start of a new beginning, a new look,” Matt ominously uttered. “More details to follow …”

    Funked up, 3:20 p.m.

The night before at the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Jeff Hardy witnessed Dory Funk Jr., officially join the class of 2009. With all the pomp and circumstance at the Toyota Center, The Charismatic Enigma couldn’t get an intimate moment with his former Funkin’ Dojo trainer. Jeff’s genuine congratulatory handshake is firmly received by Funk who reciprocates with some advice, ever the teacher.

    The bottom line, 3:47 p.m.

Sans glass shatter, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s path intersects with that of a war-bound Jeff Hardy. Earlier in the week, Hardy revealed that despite his strong connection with so many of this year’s WWE Hall of Fame additions, the most influential inductee to him is The Texas Rattlesnake.

Austin briefly describes the honor of joining the Hall, then segues to encouraging Jeff to supply his brother with a much deserved thrashing a few hours from this moment … because Stone Cold said so.

The key to success?, 4:22 p.m.

Matt Hardy truly does intend on making WrestleMania the dawn of a brand new day. The details he earlier alluded to surface near the seamstress table in the locker room. Fresh off the sewing machine is Hardy’s newly fashioned ring attire. Tonight, Matt ditches his recognizable cargo pant-inspired gear and embraces an entirely new style: Classic tights.

Matt’s set of black and cobalt tights boast an interesting symbol – a key – that houses his “MH” insignia. He does not hesitate to describe the relevance of this theme.

“I’m going to unlock my destiny and prove that I am the superior member of the Hardy family,” Matt said.

Putting his face on, 5:32 p.m.

Like strokes on a canvas, Jeff Hardy slowly applies a thick coat of color to his wrinkled brow, leaving a brilliant tincture. Using Kryolan Aquacolor Day Glow Effects, Jeff begins with his forehead, then moves down the bridge of his nose and below to his throat.

He puckers and tilts, reaching the jaw line, clef – all the right sects of his contoured face.

Hardy’s palette is a five-piece tray of fluorescent color wells. He only uses the purple – the first time he’s ever used this particular shade, which he describes as a “traditional Hardy Boy color.” This tint also syncs well with not just his brand-new boots, but also his matching belt, which he strips from a pair of jeans he wore days earlier.

    Maintaining the mane, 5:40 p.m.

In a rare glimpse of a Superstar with their hair down, Matt glowers beneath his combed forth mane. He peers at the reflective glass feet away from him as the hairstylist brushes and teases his thick, dark hair. Despite this primping, Matt’s deep brown eyes remain concentrated.

    An artist, 5:44 p.m.
(Videos of Jeff: Gearing for battlePutting his game face on)

Jeff next applies a pure white paint to fill in the symmetrical pattern he’s already established. Above all else, The Charismatic Enigma is an artist, admittedly inspired by Superstars like The Ultimate Warrior. His innate skill is evident as the pigment vanishes beneath the broad lines of electric violet.

“It’s easy to blend in sometimes but it’s harder to stand out,” Jeff asserted. “It’s art. This whole business is art. I’m a piece of art, myself.”

    No more waiting, 7:16 p.m.

“Time has come …” as Matt’s brother and enemy’s entrance theme suggests. Matt is well aware. Barking intensely on his way toward the arena entrance, the elder Hardy’s wrists and fists are tightly taped, creasing with each clench. Outside the partition lies a sold-out Reliant Stadium crowd that has waited for 16 years of the Hardys’ career for this “dream match.” One questions how long Matt has dreamt the same.
