It was a monthly tradition. Once a month, you would stay up late on a Saturday night and at 11:35, you would turn on NBC to watch Saturday Night's Main Event. Then, if you were like me, you would get yelled at the next day for sleeping during church because you stayed up late. But no matter how many times you would get yelled at, it was worth it because the action you saw on those monthly programs were nothing like anything else on free TV.
Fans can now relive that tradition with WWE Home Video's latest DVD release - WWE The Best of Saturday Night's Main Event. It's a three disc set that features over thirty matches. All of your favorite WWE Superstars, past and present, are featured on this release.
Hulk Hogan, "Cowboy" Bob Orton, "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Terry Funk, Mr. T, Jake"The Snake"Roberts, Randy"Macho Man"Savage, Miss Elizabeth, Bobby"The Brain"Heenan, Jimmy"Mouth of the South"Hart, "Mean" Gene Okerlund, Vince McMahon, Jesse"The Body"Ventura, Ricky"The Dragon"Steamboat, The HartFoundation, The British Bulldogs, Andre The Giant, The Honky Tonk Man, Koko B. Ware, Mr. Perfect, "The Model" Rick Martel, The Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, George"The Animal"Steele, Junkyard Dog, King Kong Bundy, "Million $ Man" Ted DiBiase, Virgil, "King" Harley Race, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, The Ultimate Warrior, Brutus"The Barber"Beefcake, "Outlaw" Ron Bass, The Twin Towers, "The Doctor of Style" Slick, The Brain Busters, The Rockers, "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, "Sweet" Sapphire, "The Genius" Lanny Poffo, Sid Justice, "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, The Undertaker, Paul Bearer, The Mountie, Shane McMahon, D-Generation X, The Spirit Squad, Edge, John Cena, "Lord" Alfred Hayes, Matt Hardy, Evander Holyfield and more!
As I mentioned before, this is a special 3 disc set. Disc 1 features matches from the years of 1985, when the program began, through 1987. Disc 2 features matches from 1988 and 1989. On Disc 3, you see matches from the years 1990, 1991, and 1992, when the show ended temporarily. Then you see matches from the recent episodes of 2006.
Here's what I thought was good about the DVD set. There was plenty of Randy"Macho Man"Savage, which as you know, I am a huge fan of and am disappointed that WWE Home Video has never released a DVD of his career. Well, The Best of Saturday Night's Main Event does a very good job of covering Savage's career the best they could. Macho Madness fans can see their main Macho Man compete as a heel against Jake Roberts, the joining of The MegaPowers and then the ultimate destruction of the power union. For the moment, it's the best thing to a Randy Savage DVD.
Here's what I thought was bad about the DVD set. I would've liked to have seen a few more matches from the new episodes that have aired in the last two years. I also wouldn't have minded if there was an extra or an Easter Egg that had several pre-show interviews that the wrestlers on the episodes would perform. I feel the DVDs were lacking on the extras front. In total, there are only eight extras and only two of those extras are additional matches. They didn't have to fill up the extras with more matches but they could've used this section as a place to store interviews or comedy pieces involving Superstars and other personalities.
One thing that they could've placed that I think fans would've enjoyed would've been the interviews performed pool side with some of the Superstars. Another interesting piece of footage the producer could've gave us were bloopers. I'm sure through the years with all of the comedy segments the WWE produced and all of the pre-match promos, there were some outtakes. Whether or not they were funny, who knows but wouldn't you have liked to have seen them?
All in all, WWE The Best of Saturday Night's Main Event is a great DVD and will truly satisfy any old school fans who want to relive great memories, matches and moments from the past. It will satisfy new school fans as well as they can look back and learn more about a show that was a staple of WWE programming for over five years.

On Tuesday, January 27, WWE Friday Night SmackDown! rolls into the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for a back-to-back TV Taping. That means they will tape the January 30th episode and the February 6th episode in one night.
With two live events featuring the SmackDown! brand, it only makes sense to have the RAW and ECW Superstars invade Indiana as well. This is the first time, the RAW brand has ever competed in Hammond, Indiana.
