    The "True" Wrestling Fan

Sunday, March 8, 2009, 10:19 AM EST [General]

A lot of WWE fans, whether older or younger, have only become fans within the last decade. That's all good...don't get me wrong. However, whether you're young or old, I invite you to go to the next level of fan-dom. What is that level, you might ask?

If you've been watching wrestling and been a fan of the business for years, then you already know what I'm talking about, so this invitation is directed to you fans of recent years. Vince McMahon has done so much to turn wrestling into what it is today, and my hat's off to Vince for doing a GREAT job! But I can remember the days when I went to wrestling matches that only had a couple hundred people in attendance. Just like the wrestlers (themselves) from yesteryear paved the path for the superstars of today, we fans of yesteryear paved the path for you fans of today.

We old-timer fans made the trips, often traveling miles because wrestling wasn't as widespread as it is today, to far away cities just to watch our "heroes" LIVE. We couldn't talk to all our friends and family about the wrestling superstars because hardly anyone knew WHO we were talking about, and to even mention that you were a "wrestling fan" oftentimes meant ridicule. If you ever did happen to come across someone who even knew what you were talking about, you felt as if you'd found a friend for life. It was like, "Yippee, I finally found someone else who actually understands me!"

So, my invitation to those of you who are new to wrestling, or have only been fans for the last decade or so, take the time to learn about the history of wrestling. Ask questions of those who are veteran fans. Every chance you get, watch video clips, VCR tapes, or DVDs of past matches and interviews. Do what I've done, purchase the biography DVD sets of superstars from the past. My two sons are (presently) both under the age of 13, and they can tell you all about the HISTORY of wrestling spanning over the last 40 years.

So, what makes for a "TRUE" wrestling fan? It's not just loving the present-day moment of what's happening right now on RAW, ECW, or Smackdown, but also appreciating and respecting the history, the work, the blood - sweat - tears, and the very LEGACY of the wrestlers, promoters, managers and announcers who paved the path for the superstars of today. If you can do that, you can call yourself a TRUE Wrestling Fan!

    Sincerely -- Mark - MrWebAuthor

My hat is off for you, man that was well said...i like what you wrote. I have been a fan for most of my life, been watching it way before it became so mainstream as it is today. i know exactly what you talking about...going to live events where the arena was not even half full. I remember seeing Junkyard Dog Vs. One Man Gang, at the Myriad Convention Center in OKC, OK , when I was a little boy, my dad took me, we had seats that were on the floor, not exactly ringside...but it was cool. I was watching Mid South Wrestling, World Class championship wrestling, Georgia Championship Wrestling, UWF, GWF and list goes on and on....growing up, and to this day. I love wrestling. Been to several live events, hope to see more in the future. I would like for you to check out my site www.bigtimewrest...
