Night of Champions is an outstanding pay per view concept. Every championship overseen by WWE was defended last night. Some were retained, some switched hands, but every match told a story. And whether you liked the event, somewhat liked the event, or did not like the event, you certainly have an opinion on it. And I have my opinions to expostulate on.
First of all, I say enough; enough already!!! How many more times are WWE officials going to allow Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase to interfere on behalf of their Legacy leader, WWE Champion Randy Orton? It's real easy to put stipulations on a match; could they not have put another stip on Rhodes and DiBiase? That just tore me apart, and absolutely took the wind of out the sails of both Triple H and John Cena, in their respective quest to gain the championship. You know, we've had steel cage matches to settle scores. What about the next time Randy Orton defends his Championship we have both DiBiase and Rhodes locked inside of a cage at ringside, so they could not interfere!
WWE Officials: Be bold, have some moxie, and get the playing field back on an even keel. Hunter and Cena deserved far better last night, and if Orton had retained the title without his lackeys around the scene, then it would have been more palatable for my liking. I hope that special guest host Shaquille O'Neal took notice of last night's developments, and will have something to say about it on tonight's Raw.
Congrats to Jeff Hardy, who emerged as World Heavyweight Champion for a second time by defeated CM Punk. Jeff once again showed me how resilient he is as a competitor, as he dug deep and pulled it out over Punk with the Twist of Fate and Swanton. However, let me say that I truly feel that Punk has been truthful and spot on in his analogy of his opponent last night. Even since Punk cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase at Hardy's expense, many in the WWE Universe felt that Punk did Jeff wrong, a miscarriage of justice. Whether you agree or disagree with Punk, he is being as honest as he possibly can be in his feelings toward Jeff, and the way that his life has gone for him. But again, actions speak louder than words, and said actions of Jeff Hardy last night inside the squared circle paid dividends for him.
Now let me get on my soapbox concerning the ECW Championship, and ECW in general. Christian now wears the gold around his waist, after dethroning Tommy Dreamer; so much for the home field advantage in Philadelphia for Dreamer. However, I really believe that the ECW Championship did not get the proper recognition last night, and here's my take: First of all, the ECW Championship is the major title of that group's flagship show on Scyfy. I consider the ECW Championship to be one of the big three championships (WWE and World Titles as well). Therefore, it amazed me that they could not give the title match the "old school introductions" like the other two title matches got last night. Further to that, why was Dreamer introduced as champion before Christian was introduced as challenger? (same thing happened with CM Punk coming out first in his match against Jeff Hardy). I have said this before: I love what this company does very much, but for Pete's sake, always introduce the Challenger first!!! Give the existing Champion the props that he has earned! That should be for ALL championship matches. ECW is fast becoming a fun show to watch every week, and it should be given the same protocol and courtesy that Raw and SmackDown receive! To me, ECW is definitely the "little engine that could"!
Brilliant and ballsy move by Chris Jericho to anoint the Big Show as the co-holder of the WWE Unified Tag Team Championship. They say that oil and water don't mix, especially with these two egotistical individuals, but I think here it does. I see this association as strictly business. I don't expect these two to pal around, travel together, etc. But when it comes time to punch the card and go to work, both will be there right out of the gate. I like this pairing of brains and brawn, of strength and finesse, and all I hope for is that they fulfill their commitment as Unified Tag Team Champions by defending their titles on all three brands. I also believe that Jericho send a statement out to the recuperating Edge with his selection of Big Show; I wonder what the Rated-R Superstar thinks about it ...
Quickies: Dolph Ziggler is going to continue to be a player on SmackDown. Although falling short of the mark in his quest to win the Intercontinental Championship from Rey Mysterio last night, Ziggler should take this match and be pleased with the effort that he put forth. There will be other championship opportunities for this charismatic individual going forward. Oh, and just what does Maria see in Ziggler anyway?..... On the women's' front, Michelle McCool and Melina had a competitive Women's Championship Match, which could have gone either way; Michelle was just that much better when it counted. On our live chat last night, the name Michelle McCruel came up in discussion; she certainly filled that bill, for sure.....Congrats to Mickie James, who like the aforementioned McCool now can say that she has worn both the Women's Championship and Diva's Championship. After everything that she was subjected to against Maryse leading up to last night's match, she turned things around and walked out with some gold. But also I felt that although Mickie was happy, she showed some arrogant emotion on her win. After she was given the Diva's Championship, you could see Mickie say "that's what I'm talking about", and then said a few words to Maryse as well. Everything that was pent up inside of the Richmond fireball came out, and she gave it back to her opponent. Good for you Mickie.........Kofi Kingston had to navigate and fight traffic, but he did emerge with the United States Championship still around his waist. Winning a match involving six individuals was no easy task, but the talented Jamaican endured; his star continued to rise.
What will the fallout be from last night's Night of Champions? We'll see tonight on Monday Night Raw, tomorrow night on ECW on Scyfy, and this Friday with SmackDown on My Network. And tonight we have a Mega Monday chat right here, sponsored by Gillette. Join us at 8:30 PM ET. And if you saw Night of Champions, please comment on what you thought.
Thanks for reading, and chat with you tonight.
