I agree to an extent, but...
1) The rules are complicated and changing out the refs would be a brutally tough test, especially over one offseason.
2) Ultimately the number of really bad calls over a season isn't THAT high.  Consider how many calls are made that are correct and just how many there are over the course of even a single quarter.  You get what, an average of MAYBE 3-4 questionable calls a game, and even fewer calls that draw massive protests?  It's not nearly as bad as it looks.
3) Human error is inevitable.  No matter what officials you get, bad calls will happen, especially with penalties.  Watching the game at full speed can make things look worse than they really are.
4) Mike Pereira has always been good about explaining why a questionable call was made and apologizing if there is a badly blown call.

The bottom line is that while the officiating at times can get annoying- and yes, I know this contradicts what I previously posted- the end result really isn't that bad.  The terrible calls (or ones that fans don't agree with) just stick out because they're the ones that get focused on during commentary.  There's nothing wrong with that, obviously, but that bias in coverage results in the officiating being made out to be far worse than it is.

Come on, that's not even remotely fair.  How are NFL schedule-makers supposed to know which teams are going to be winners and losers each year?

Exactly...I'm no Colts fan, my team is the Titans. Even though I hate the team, I respect the players on the Colts. The schedules are pre-made, no one knew the Titans would be 1-6 after 7 games, no one knew Miami was gonna be 3-4 after 7. It's not the Colts fault their schedule has been weak so far. Besides strength of schedule doesn't matter much, what matters is that you take care of business, the Colts are winning the games people expect them to win. The Cardinals schedule last year wasn't hard, but yet they made it all the way to the Superbowl and almost won.

Yep, and on the flip side, the Steelers had a brutal schedule and won it all; if anything, I see that tougher schedule as an advantage come playoff time, because it's such great preparation for the postseason.  Heck, the Steelers were already 3-0 against their playoff opponents before even playing them in January.

The point is this: the schedule a team gets doesn't really matter.  What matters is winning the games you need to win and having momentum at the right time.

I think he also forgot that the Colts play the 5-3 Texans this week.

BTW, I think a lot of people expected the Dolphins to slip a bit due to a tough schedule.  They didn't do too well against winning teams last year (look at how badly they got mauled by the Ravens in the playoffs) and that's starting to show up this season.  But the Titans, wow.  I can't believe losing Jim Schwartz to the Lions is having that much of an impact.

Yeah, because I'm sure when they made their scheduel they said "I think the Rams, 49'ers, Dolphins, Seahawks, and Bills are going to be great teams this year."

At least the Dolphins won their division last year. For like the 3rd straight year they have the Patriots, but it's in Indy. Never in Foxboro.

I'm not a Colts fan, but the Colts can't control how their schedule is made. It's not the Colts fault the AFC South was paired to play the NFC West this year. It's not their fault the NFC West isn't good. The Patriots played against the NFC West last yr, other than the Cards, nobody in that division was decent last yr. Strength of schedule is not that important, as long as you win the game you're supposed to then it doesn't matter how strong your schedule is. Now playing harder teams helps you for when you trying to go deep in the playoffs, but the Cards were only minutes away from winning the Superbowl & their schedule was not one of the hardest in the NFL.

Well hell, if the NFL wants Peyton to play poorly, just put him in front of the Chargers or Steelers' defenses.  Works every time.
