Tonight, on TNA's Impact, there is a 'rematch' for their version of the World Title between two of the most over-rated, internet loved wrestlers, one of which is a borderline psychotic.
I'm of course talking about Kurt Angle, you know, the guy who left two of the three I's in the WWE Locker room when he was fired Integrity, and Intelligence for those who don't know what I'm talking about).
Since roughly the time he got dumped on his head by Brickhead... I mean Brock Lesnar, Angle has pretty much gone around the loony bin. Take a long hard look at every interview he's done 'out of the character' and you can see that nutcase believes his own hype to the point where he has become a bigger joke than Paul Heyman (and that's saying something)
From his endless rants about wanting to do some weak, garbage MMA fights to somehow convincing the powers that be in TNA to booking an actual MMA styled match for their last PPV to claiming that Mr. Vincent K. McMahon wanted to quote unquote 'fight him', Angle has proven over and over again why he's a freakin' north end of a south bound donkey (HEE-HAW!).
Of course that's my opinion... and I know I'm not wrong on this.
A little bit of a history lesson today, back in 2001 on this date, Matt Hardy won a singles title, namely the European Championship, by beating Eddie Guerrero. In fact Hardy has won a few singles titles in the WWE, the Hardcore and Cruiserweight titles.
Now is it because the titles have been retired that it's not mention on WWE TV? Or do these belts history just aren't important.
I'm not sure because quite a few legendary names held the same belts Hardy won, so somewhere along the name, someone said that 'those belts don't count', which is a damn shame.
Now is it me... or is there always a real hit or miss factor when Superstars and Divas sit in on commentary. Some are completely natural (MVP), others make me reach for the mute button (Batista) others just won't shut uo (Former Superstar Bookter fills in here) and some just seem to sit there (Matt Hardy)
I'm fully aware that being announcer is a tough job and very few people can pull it off well.... and the normal color-man is often times there to provide insight... but it's when that third wheel is added things seem to be a total adventure, which in same cases may not be a good thing.
Take MVP for example, spoke cleary, put himself and Matt Hardy over, got points across smoothly and had time to insult the Coach. And unlike a certain former 5-Time WCW Champion who bitched his way out of the WWE... MVP actually let the play by play man (Cole) do his job to call some action.
Now on the flip side of the coin... Matt Hardy I could barely hear (and I have the volume on my TV turned way up to the max!) but the parts I did here were good... but just didn't have the level of importance MVP put behind them. I'm not critizing Hardy, I'm just using it as an example that not everyone is destined to be a color man.
**Note** If Hardy was sick and doing color like Molly Holly did a few years ago, then i can understand why I couldn't hear him.
Of course... that's just my opinion, I could be wrong
Today is a bit of a historical footnote, it's the day "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig defeated Tito Santana in a tournament for the WWE IC Title. Now the IC title was of course vacant because not to long before the tournament, the man who is making his return to the ring over in Italy, The Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan in a title vs title match to win the WWE Title.
The tournament itself was held between April 4 and April 23 1990, with Hennig facing The Superfly Jimmy Snuka in the first round. Tito Santana was placed against Akeem (AKA The One Man Gang). Now I'm not familar with the particulars of why, but both got byes to the finals, where Hennig won (with the legendary Weasel Bobby Heenan in his corner)
As the IC Champ, Hennig would face Hulk Hogan on Saturday Night's Main Event a few days later, plus successfully retain the title against Tito Santana in a rematch during the July 1990's Saturday Night's Main Event before losing the title to 'Texas Tornado' Kerry Von Erich at Summerslam.
**Note** I don't recall any other major matches from his reign **
While his first run as an IC Champion didn't last long, it did help to firmly establish just how important and good 'Mr. Perfect' was. Particulary when Von Erich TANKED as the IC Champ (possibly due to his foot... but that's just pure speculation)
Of course... that's just my opinion I could be wrong.
Last night watching ECW on SCI-FI featured one of the reasons why the new ECW is great and how smart the people who sign talent is. The reason comes in the form of a gorgeous blond beauty under the name Kelly Kelly.
Now we all remember Kelly's early days on ECW back in 06, and how the 'Know it alls' bashed her for the strip-tease acts, but Kelly has proven herself over and over again. From a few throw-away catfights between 06 and 07, Kelly has turned into a fun wrestling Diva. Can anyone say that they would've pictured her 'counter wrestling' her way into using a rocker droper to win a match (which was the case last night)? No they wouldn't.
Now why she's light years ahead of non-WWE Divas, it's simple, Kelly is young, I think she's like 5 years younger than myself, which is going to give her an advantage. Remember Trinity, the fiesty Italian who was Nunzio's valet? She was already in her late 30s when she made her ECW Debut,
Sure age may not be a big factor, but considering that Kelly is so young and has gotten so good in under three years leaves a lot of room for wondering will she be as good or possibly even better than say.. Melina, Victoria, or just about every Diva out there.
Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
