UPDATE (11:30 p.m. ET): In one of the most-exciting Super Bowl games in history, Santonio Holmes caught a touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger with :35 left to clinch the Pittsburgh Steelers' record SIXTH Super Bowl title with a 27-23 cardiac-inducing victory!
Check out how Santonio toes that end zone line (above) for one of the greatest catches in championship history!!
Tonight's the night ... it's SUPER BOWL XLIII (or 43, for you non-Romans). My beloved Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Arizona Cardinals for the World Championship. (strange how an American team has won the World Championship EVERY year, huh?)
Don't be surprised to see more than 80% of the crowd in Tampa tonight waving their Terrible Towels, as "Steeler Nation" goes for their sixth Super Bowl title (would be a record) -- the "Six Pack", if you will. Arizona is appearing in its first-ever Super Bowl.
The fan songs and the parodies for the Black and Gold are rampant this year.... here's just a sampling.... ("Here we go" and "Steeler Ladies")
And ... as the x-factor ... we got LUCHADORS on our side!! Yeah, LUCHADORS!! Viva Los Steelers!!
Make your pick, WWE Universe, who is winning this one?
I'll take my Steelers for the win, 34-24 over the upstart Cardinals! And join the Raw Live Blog Monday night for the Steelers victory party (or pity party, depending...)
See you all then.... Good luck Arizona... GO STEELERS!!
Tonight's the night for sports, if you're from Pittsburgh like me.
Tonight, the Eastern Conference Champion Pittsburgh Penguins start their home campaign (well, not actually, since they were the home team once in Stockholm, Sweden, during the NHL Premiere Series) at Mellon Arena, as the Pens try to avenge their Stanley Cup series loss last season. And the above video from the Penguins set the mood perfectly... it's a great day for hockey!! (well, isn't ANY day great for it?)
Also, the undefeated Penn State Nittany Lions roll into Madison, Wisc. tonight to take on the Wisconsin Badgers in prime time. With Texas' big win over Oklahoma today in the Red River Shootout (Sorry, J.R.), this opens the door for the potential Big Ten Champion to sneak into the national Top 5, maybe even the BCS Title Game if they're lucky.
Just wanted to stop by and let you all know we've got a big Raw Live Blog coming up this Monday... set up your reminder here....
...and are just a little more than two weeks out from Cyber Sunday in Phoenix. Joey Styles had a great idea this week (among his many) ... why not let WWE Universe VOTE on who the Live Blog guest will be for Cyber Sunday's Superstar Q&A?
So, we'll make that happen this week! Look for the vote to appear on this blog or the Live Blog "blog" around Wednesday. We have three potential blockbuster guests ... it'll be a tough vote, to be sure.
Let's Go Pens! WE ARE... PENN STATE! **insert own chant here**
The NHL Stanley Cup Finals are this weekend, and if you've followed my blog lately, you know I'm a die-hard fan of the Eastern Conference Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
But the NHL's prized trophy, the Stanley Cup, is cherished by hockey players worldwide. It's more than 100 years old, and has the unique tradition of being given to each winning player and executive for a day to enjoy on their own -- complete with security guard from the Hockey Hall of Fame that guards the trophy's well-being.
Other than the various WWE championship titles, WWE has no "trophy" per se that is awarded in this fashion. The Money in the Bank briefcase is the closest to such a annually-awarded cherished trophy as you can get. And the robe, crown, and scepter of the King of the Ring is a close second.
So, do you think WWE should have something that resembles the Stanley Cup in prestigue and stature? Send your comments in below.
Wow, what a crazy day at WWE.com! And an exciting weekend of sports overall!
First, while getting all my details squared away for our first-ever pay-per-view Live Blog in WWE Fan Nation history, I watched my hometown Pittsburgh Penguinsdemolish the Philadelphia Flyers 6-0 to win their series in five games, and earn a ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals -- their first in 16 years. The Pens have not lost at home in the Igloo since FEBRUARY!!!
Congrats to everyone in the Steel City! I wish I was there to party with all those fans camped out at the Mellon Arena. Then, a bunch of us in the office sweated out a Boston Celtics' Game 7 victory over Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Amazing win by the C-men!
Then finally, to cap off a great weekend, we had WWE Judgment Day live from Omaha, Neb. Special thanks to Howard Finkeland Joey Styles for taking part in WWE Fan Nation's Live Blog during the event. (read the transcript here)
WWE Fan Nation is outraged -- and rightly so -- by the actions of SmackDown GM Vickie Guerrero, who declared the World Heavyweight Championship vacant again after Undertaker defeated her fiancee Edge by countout.
Her logic: You can not win the title by countout or disqualification.
And unfortunately, as much as it pains me to say so, I agree with the GM's ill-timed decision.
WWE titles have a long history and tradition of not being awarded by countout or DQ, and this falls under that rule, even though Guerrero, regrettably, did not declare this before the match.
So, with Guerrero's decision, no doubt the Undertaker remains the No. 1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Title with his victory.
But what about Edge? Does he deserve another title opportunity after losing to the Undertaker for the third-straight time in as many months? And will the WWE Board of Directors step in and address any favortism by the SmackDown GM?
I'm sure we'll find out the likely fiancee-friendly answer this Friday on SmackDown.
In the WWE.com office kitchenette/break room, there is an old-school STIGA table hockey game on the table near the vending machines that some co-workers use to blow off steam. The table's teams are the Detroit Red WIngs and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Both those teams are up 3 games to none in the Stanley Cup Conference Finals and looks to be on a collision course to battle for Lord Stanley's Cup.
So, with Pittsburgh's dominating 4-1 win over Filthy Philly last night, our kitchenette hockey table may have predicted the Stanley Cup Finals. Good on you, hockey table!
Of course, this means that the Penguins (who are 11-1 so far in the playoffs -- only the fourth team in history to do so) are looking for the sweep Thursday night. Nothing would be sweeter than to knock off Cheesesteak City and return to the Cup Finals for the first time since 1992.
I smell sweep! And so does legendary fashion-plate hockey announcer Don Cherry.... make it work, Don!
