Personally, I've always liked the old "face/heel" formula from back in the day. Jesse Ventura and Bobby Heenan, (and even Jerry Lawler about 10 years ago) were masters at their slimy observations of a match, but the most important thing was that the commentary wasn't so damn one-sided. At least back then we got to hear both sides of the story regarding a match, and believe it or not, sometimes, heel commentators make good points about why a "bad guy" might do what he does. The last decent heel announcer we had was JBL. (He could actually get us to hate him more, if that was possible- what great mic skills!) But today, more than ever we are being force-fed one singular point of view, and Cole, Tazz, and JR are doing their darnedest to try and get we audience members to feel a certain way about a wrestler.
It wouldn't be so bad if both announcers remained professional and unbiased with their opinions, which they say they are, but never do. They highly praise the faces, and give heels little to no credit at all. If a bad guy cheats to win a title, he's the "ultimate opportunist!" If a good guy cheats to win, its because he "took advantage of the situation." Guess that's why you're the cerebral assassin, huh, Tripple H?
Commentary is so boring these days when the announcers just agree on everything. Perhaps that's why I favor heels more than I ever have before. Going along with these announcers just makes me feel like a mindless sheep. They've got to get back to the standard formula; Another veteran wrestling fan made a good point about how face/heel commentary mirrors the bout inside the ring, as two "students of the game" try to one-up each other on the mic. It makes the commentary more dynamic, more creative, and much more entertaining (King Lawler used to have me rolling on the floor laughing maybe 50 times a night during Raws. He used to be the funniest man on TV)
Case in Point: last night Jerry Lawler just couldn't believe Randy Orton would have the audacity to read a written apology to the WWE! Oh no! A written apology? Why, that must be the worst thing somebody's ever done ever! Orton's despicable! How could he? Lawler... shut the hell up! I've seen heels do much worse, so why don't you calm down? A good heel announcer would have pointed out at least he's apologizing at all. This might have been the last straw for me. I swear, listening to these guys (especially Michael Cole- "Mike Knox, what a...bully!") sometimes makes these matches unwatchable. We're best served attending the shows live, just so we don't have to listen to them oversell all these good guys; If I hear "Rainbow-haired warrior" one more time...
Anyone getting tired of WWE commentary?
